Ms. Zarmina Panah is a Ph.D. candidate at Kings College London, England, where she is currently researching the 'Development of Prisoners of War status in the context of International Humanitaritan Law' under the supervision of Professor Rein Mullerson. Her research focuses on the question of whether further development of laws concerning the prisoners of war is needed to meet the circumstances of post 9/11 conflicts. How can traditional rules be applied to the detention of persons (who are not combatants as known in the Geneva conventions) in a conflict such as the current 'war' against international terrorism, which may last indefinitely? Zarmina received her LL.M in International Law at City University London, England, where she wrote her final dissertation on Democratization of "Failed States". She completed her LL.B in the University of Heidelberg, Germany and also studied Private International Law at the University Basel, Switzerland. In 2007, she published an article examining the role of German Soldiers in Afghanistan (LUFTWAFFE REVUE 06/2007). During her studies for her LL.B, she took part on student research projects about UN Trade law and The Role of International Law during World War II in Germany at the Max Planck Institute for Public International Law, Heidelberg. In her professional experience, Zarmina has worked as a legal assistant for an IT company in London and practiced law as an article clerk in the civil division at the district court in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

During her time at Osgoode, she will contribute to the research activities of the CLPE Program and to the editorial work of the German Law Journal (www.germanlawjournal.com).
